In 1987, five young men from Oslo, Norway were signed by Polygram and joined forces to record an album of finest Scandinavian AOR and Melodic Rock: DA VINCI’s self-titled debut. This album has a lot in common with Sarah McLachlan as well as Boston, which isn't a big surprise since Kimberley Dahme did write 'With You' off Boston's “Corporate America” album, and her own interpretation of the song is also on this album.
The Boston connection doesn't stop here because Gary Pihl and Tom Scholz are helping out on the album. This is a fine collection of well written soft rock, country and bluesy rock songs that works fine within it's confinements, but I seriously doubt any of our readers will have this one on top of their shopping lists any day of the week. Open minded rock fans might check it out, but if your strictly focused on AOR and meldodic rock – it won’t work.

Rebel Within
Silent Rage guitarist / singer Jesse Damon has his third solo release on offern and after the lame and lacklustre previous release “Nothin Else Matters” things can only change to the better. It’s already a very positive sign to see the mighty Paul Sabu back at the production helm and co-writing every song at “Rebel Within”. The opening track “Cry Out Loud” is pretty much in the classic Silent Reign vein, but I have to admit that there are a few mediocre tunes inbetween, which are just average compared to standout tracks like “All That I Am”, “Livin’ On The Edge” and “Lethal Rebel”. With more tunes of this calibre “Rebel Within” could have been essential, but in this case it’s just a proper release.

Death Squad
Finally, the CD reissue of Darkness' debut, 'Death Squad'. Originally released in 1987, this album is a must for fans of Kreator, Destruction and Exumer. This excellent Battle Cry Records reissue adds 7 bonus tracks! The best thing about this album to me has always been the complex guitar solos, and the tight, rapid drumming. Lots of German high speed riffing here, that doesn't get boring! I bought this in around 1989 because I liked the cover art (sorta reminded me of the Slayer pic disc, plus members were baring MDC and DRI shirts on the back cover. The bands influence on me can be seen in a band I was in that named ourselves after the title of this album, DeathSquad. I love this one, always have.

Defenders Of Justice
The music is made up of quite basic elements but the outcome is surprisingly fascinating. This is primarily due to the fair amount of variety and hooks included in songs, without sacrificing heaviness or speed in the process. Somehow this refined formula makes Darkness sound a lot better and effective than many other better-known German bands. Just take Battle To The Last or Locked as examples of tracks that initially appear pretty ordinary but eventually turn out to be quite fine pieces indeed. On this album Darkness delivered some extremely solid thrash metal that contains enough fine details to give the whole thing a boost well above the average level.

Altered Reflections
DARKOLOGY, the Texas-based band featuring guitarist Michael Harris (VITALIJ KUPRIJ), drummer Brian Harris (ex-FIREWIND), bassist Mike Neal and vocalist Kelly "Sundown" Carpenter (BEYOND TWILIGHT, OUTWORLD), has signed a worldwide deal with an as-yet-undisclosed record label. The group's forthcoming debut album, entitled "Altered Reflections", is described in a press release as "riffy metal with face-melting solos, thunderous drumming and howling vocals."
In related news, Carpenter has contributed vocals to the metal concept project "Samuel Arkan's Origins", which is nearing completion. The singer states, "It's a powerful album with a great story and features a host of well known artists from bands such AYREON, VIRUS IV, THUNDERSTONE, DIAL, PAIN OF SALVATION and more."
Carpenter is one of the guest singers who will perform with Florida melodic metallers CRIMSON GLORY during their headlining set at the ProgPower USA X festival on September 11, 2009 at the Center Stage in Atlanta, Georgia.
"This is truly exciting, as it is rare to be given such a unique opportunity to show respect and admiration for one of my favorite artists," says Kelly. "On this very special night, myself and many other vocalists from the metal community will pay tribute to the late and great Midnight [CRIMSON GLORY singer]!"

The happenings of Dawnrider were going to happen long time before the novel starts, there‘s a time frame of approximately 100 years between them. The plannings for the first Dawnrider album were starting back in the beginning of 2004, when Tarek had the basic shapes of the concept in mind. After he returned from touring with Majesty he started working on the first songs, which feature a lot of different characters. Tarek wanted the story to be sung by characteristic metalsingers, so that the different roles of Dawnrider benefit from the huge variety of all the different voices that are involved. Call Of The Wild
The name DECOY might be new to you, but the names behind it are very well-known. The band is a joint venture between guitarist Torben Enevoldsen of PANGEA, SECTION A and FATAL FORCE fame and former GRAND ILLUSION singer Peter Sundell. So it's no surprise that „Call Of The Wild“ sounds like a mixture of FATAL FORCE and GRAND ILLUSION. In other words, it has become a Melodic Metal album enriched with some slight elements of AOR and Prog. The playing of Torben Enevoldsen and the vocal performance of Peter Sundell are beyond any reproach. Latter sings a bit more aggressive than he did on his previous works and in parts he sounds very similar to FATAL FORCE singer Mats Leven. Songwriting wise there is also nothing to complain about on „Call Of The Wild“. The album features straight and fast-paced rockers like „Call Of The Wild“ and „Heavy Metal Thunder“ (no cover of the SAXON classic) as well as a little more complex songs („Divided“, „Make A Stand“) and balladesque tunes („Brothers In Arms“, „Forever And Ever“). But no matter how DECOY go about doing a song, they always deliver strong and instantly likeable melodies. Even though there are a lot of positive things to report about DECOY's „Call Of The Wild“, I also have to touch on a negativ thing: the production! Unfortunately Torben Enevoldsen didn't manage to give the album the right dose of power house sound. The reason is the powerless bass- and drum sound as well as missing keyboards and a second guitar on a couple of songs. With a better production the songs would have sounded even better! If DECOY can eliminate this weak-point for their next release, then they could really accelerate. However, with „Call Of The Wild“ they did a fine first coup!

It is extremely difficult to put one specific label on the Degree Absolute material. While having firm roots in progressive metal, DA strays from the path quite frequently, exploring the worlds of jazz and ambient music, as well as doom, thrash, and technical metal. If it was possible to compare the music of DA to the music of other well-known bands, one could say that it is based somewhere between Fates Warning's semi-progressive melodies and WatchTower's technical playing skills.
The Degree Absolute project began when multi-instrumentalist Aaron Bell came to the conclusion that his song ideas and concepts could not be realized in a typical band situation. After attempting to bring his original material into different local bands with disappointing results, he decided that a new project, void of any of the compromises associated with a true band, was necessary.
To fill the bassist position, Aaron immediately contacted Dave Lindeman. They had worked together in a local band, Chaos Game, and Aaron thought Dave would be perfect for the role. Dave is a graduate of the Berklee College of Music, where he majored in music synthesis. He has performed in various capacities as a bassist in the Boston area, both as a studio musician and in live settings.
The addition of Doug Beary on drums completed the Degree Absolute line-up. Doug has been drumming with the melodic metal band, Defyance, since its inception 15 years ago. Since joining Degree Absolute, he has proven himself to be a perfect match as well as the final piece of the puzzle.
Mixing of the debut recording was performed by noted producer Neil Kernon (Nevermore, Spiral Architect, Cannibal Corpse, etc.) at Sonic Ranch in Tornillo, Texas.

Borrowed Time
The beginnings of Diamond Head reach all the way back to 1976, when guitarist Brian Tatler and drummer Duncan Scott first thought of starting a metal band together. In 1981, after releasing a couple of singles, Diamond Head finally signed a deal with a major record label - MCA Records - and put out an EP called "Four Cuts", which was a taste of the upcoming LP. Released in September 1982, "Borrowed Time" was by some considered Diamond Head's official debut, mostly because it contained two songs from "Lightning To The Nations" (both re-recorded). Overall containing seven tracks, the album was a milestone for the band's career, making it widely recognizable on the NWOBHM scene and scoring top notes from critics and reviewers worldwide. Digitally remastered, 6 bonus tracks, 1 interview, digi pack, lim. edition of 2000 numerated copies.

Canterbury
Diamond Head's third album, “Canterbury” was a huge disappointment for fans and critics alike. Gone were the colossal BLACK SABBATH inspired riffs and complex arrangements which permeated their classic debut Lightning to the Nations, replaced by an ill-fated attempt at incorporating pop elements into their songwriting. Whether this resulted from record label pressure or a conscious effort by the band to write a hit single is unknown, but Canterbury comes across as a failed experiment. The band only replicates the glory of their early days on the epic "Knight of Swords," and made to order singles like "One More Night" and "I Need Your Love" come off are pedestrian at best. Obviously wrestling over their direction, they disbanded soon after this release. Digit. remast., 2 bonus tracks, 1 interview, digi pack, lim. edition of 2000 numerated copies.

When I get asked about Dirty Rhythm’s sound I say “Imagine this as a scenario: the year is 1989, U.S. Hard Rockers Skid Row go into the studio to record 16 songs for Atlantic Records. When finishing their self-titled CD the record company tell the band they can only have 11 tracks on the album therefore they to cut 5 tracks from the list”. The five tracks that are left over would have been these five here and not left off the CD because of the quality. That's the best way I can describe these tracks from Dirty Rhythm. Sounding like they were left off Skid Row's first CD. It’s obviously apparent that Skid Row were Dirty Rhythm’s major inspiration but who else do they sound like you ask? Well Heaven’s Edge, Cry Wolf, XYZ, Hardline and Dokken all come to mind.

Dreams Of The Carrion
Disincarnate was a part of the underground death metal movement of the early '90s, led by one of the genre's best-known guitarists - James Murphy. It was through his technically innovatative work on classic albums like Death's Spiritual Healing, Obituary's Cause Of Death, and Cancer's Death Shall Rise that Murphy gained his reputation as one of death metal's primo axemen, it only seemed natural that he form a band of his own. Disincarnate recorded only one album during their existence. "Dreams of the Carrion Kind" released in 1993 on Roadrunner Records was a minor masterwork of the death metal genre. This reissue features liner notes from Murphy and bonus tracks.

Distant Warning is an all original, five piece melodic rock band hailing from Colorado Springs. Ron (vox) and Duane (lead guitar) first formed the core of this band way back in 1987. Since then they have played hundreds of shows in over 70 venues across Colorado and the southwest region. They have 4 full length CDs and are currently working on their first DVD. Since each member of Distant Warning contributes to the writing, the band's unique sound is comprised of their various influences.
The wide range of influences include everything from 80's "hair metal", "speed metal", and the great "arena bands" sounds of that time period. Also mixed in are heavy influences of classical, jazz and "classic rock" of the 70's and 80's. We are also big fans of "progressive metal", "european metal" and "nu metal" styles which have left their marks on our collective psyches. DIVINEFIRE, the Christian metal project featuring Finnish composer/drummer Jani Stefanovic and NARNIA singer vocalist Christian Rivel has released their fourth and final studio album titled “Farewell” to say thank you for the fantastic support through the years. “Farewell” follows the style of the three previously released DIVINEFIRE albums with a mixture of melodic-, power- and symphonic metal with some progressive metal overtones. It may take two or three spisn to get into the songs from “Farewell”, but after that most of the songs get stucked into your ears, cause DIVINEFIRE always had a good taste for clever songwriting. The only letdown is the very short running time of 43 minutes.

THE LATE ’80s produced a plethora of melodic rock acts from North America – none more special than Diving For Pearls.
Led by supremely talented frontman Danny Malone, this NYC-based five- piece forged one of the finest records of the era (this one) at a time when the likes of Bon Jovi, Winger, White Lion & Whitesnake were receiving platinum trophies as a matter of course.
Fêted by the critics and embraced by American radio programmers, the DFP album made an immediate impact and looked set to take the band to the top of the AOR mountain. Second effort from the Italian melodic metal outfit, which already made pretty big waves over here with their debut “Black Roses” and the following tour with Lordi. Their second effort “A Good Day To Die” turns out even stronger with a splendid mixture of fat guitar riffs, massive keyboard walls from Stefano Smeriglio and the great vocal performance from singer Daniele Santori, which is suprisingly not another Rhapsody flavoured high pitched eunuch. Melodic metal lovers into Nocturnal Rites, Dream Evil, Bloodbound and so on should keep an eye on this Italian outfit, cause they’re pretty close to enter into the first league of the European power metal league. Highly recommended for melodic metal lovers.

Despite enjoying a successful career as a singer songwriter in the Sixties and Seventies, Charlie Dominici is known by many fans from his time with DREAM THEATER, with whom he recorded their debut album, "When Dream and Day Unite", in 1989. Dominici saw the successful transition of a young band called MAJESTY who became an international success. Having left the band in 1989, his artistic achievements within DREAM THEATER are undisputed to this day. Dominici received accolades from the fans when he reunited with his former bandmates for the 15th anniversary of "When Dream and Day Unite" in 2004.
