It traces the path of a man who is betrayed by religion and turns away from it in anger. The dark forces of nature reach out to this enraged man and use him as their vessel to bring death and destruction to Earth. Through it all, he feels no remorse for his deeds, and upon reaching the end, numbly accepts his fate of eternity in Hell. Musically, the band picked up a new singer and drummer for this album. The singing is a definite improvement from the debut, ranging from a powerful growl to a Halford-like scream. Such skill is necessary to portray the wide range of feeling on this album. There's quite a bit of background keys on this disc, some choral moaning, and a memorable piano outro, which all add to the dark mood. There are also several excellent acoustic passages seamlessly interwoven with the driving guitar riffs. The music meshes perfectly with the story, magnifying the hatred, manic joy, confusion, and sadness present in the lyrics. After listening to this musical masterpiece, one cannot help but to feel some of the sadness and guilt that the Stormrider was unable to feel for himself. Everything that he desires is denied, even his own death. Fans of earlier Iced Earth albums might notice the change in the musical style to fit with this dark love story. The focus is less on technical musicianship (although the playing is still as impeccable as ever), and more on creating a complete story through sound and words. Thus, the music is generally more dark, emotional, melodic, and simple than other Iced Earth albums. This is not to say that the songs are uninteresting; to the contrary, some of the most amazing Iced Earth songs appear on this album. The crushing heaviness and power remains, but it is entwined with beauty and grace, creating Iced Earth's most thoughtful and emotional work to date. I suspect that not too many fans will have heard of this or seen any pics but it is my pleasure to get this one on the site for all you collectors and fans to see. I haven't seen this one up for sale for a few years and no wonder! Any copies on the market are quickly snapped up. Read on for more info. The box itself is roughly 12'x8'x2' in size. The picture opposite is the box on its edge. The cover (above) runs from left to right and open like a book. The contents sit in a black tray. What's really nice about this piece is that the cover actually Glows in the Dark! So when a light is shone on it and turned off the box gives off a eerie green glow. As with most notable Maiden promos a lot of work and effort has been put into this one and it is definately one for the hardcore collector. As you can see from the pic opposite this is a rather lavish promo set which is numbered and contains a fine array of Maiden goodies which include: 1. Full album CD 2. Interview cassette with Bruce 3. Fear of the Dark EPK video 4. Mini numbered poster 5. Full colour press booklet Looking more closely the items that stand out are the Press Booklet, the EPK video and the Bruce interview. The Press Booklet is fronted with the album cover and this time not a Derek Riggs Eddie but nonetheless and very good representation of the bands Mascot, emerging from a tree. Inside is a four page retrospective of the band plus the usual pre-album typr hype. There are a few colour pics of the band also. On the cover of the booklet, in the bottom left hand corner, is the issue number of the box. My particular issue number is 0929 which perhaps indicates that there are 928 previous copies but since this is a promo I very much doubt that more than 100 where issued. This promo was issued in May 1992. The Interview Cassette is Bruce talking about the album and the introduction of Janick to the band plus other thing and runs for about 20 minutes. Interesting. The EPK (electronic press kit) video on PAL format is introduce by that man Dickinson who is walking through Steve's garden, holding a flaming torch with the mist and fog swirling around him. He then goes onto talk about robbers and murder and takes us into the pub that Steve built. The appropriately named Horse and Cart. From there each band member is interviwed including Nicko in a telephone box! German metallers IVORY NIGHT first caught my attention with their appearance at 2007�s KEEP IT TRUE festival. Then the band grew higher in esteem, for being the �backing� band for SAINT (legendary White Metal band) singer Josh Kramer�s 2005 German Tour, plus ultra admiration was created seeing them joining ROSS THE BOSS BAND for selected European dates in 2006. Now, as regards music itself: Having already delivered a limited edition EP in 2003 plus the good 2004�s "7 - Dawn Of The Night" full-length, this year�s "Machine" sees the band further developing their �melodic� Metal sound in many extended fields. Beneath a mystique yet charming cover artwork, eleven tracks propose a conceptual differentiation for what we�d call �German Metal�. The band deals equally with classic Metal, on-the-edge Power/Thrash and experimental add-ons. Yes, do not worry. "Machine" surely is a Metal album. I can see the influence of the MAIDEN/PRIEST archetypes in the band�s music but a more fresh and powerful sound - as with MORGANA LEFAY or late 80s German Metal heroes SECRECY - leaning towards to �prog� Metal at times. But, no, not the cultural Prog Metal you may think of. IVORY NIGHT seem to work hard on the spine of their songs. The tunes are technical (but not complex), varied in tempos, riffing and leads. The deeds of (80s) METALLICA and the silent lunacy of MEGADETH �float� here and there while Patrick Fuchs� vocals are excellent, with passionate singing all around plus theatric growls where needed. The production is superb (for a self-financed release) with all instruments sounding powerful and equal at mix. Songs like "The Shelf" (check the intermezzo �break�) and "Breath Of The Innocent" (a guitar tribute to the legendary WISHBONE ASH?) took my breath away plus I loved the mid-tempo straightforwardness of "Charon Of Styx" and the QUEENSRYCHE-ish attitude of "Fallen Father". And what about the Heavy/Thrash lightning of "Keeping The Lie"? Now, check the band references in the three above paragraphs and build the picture. IVORY NIGHT is a band created by Metal fans willing to mix all of their likes/influences into the same blend. "Machine" is a fresh album, it is not �Nu� at all and - eventually - is a good proposal on how Metal music should sound in this (our) era.
