For „Night Of The White Rock“ the band reunited in the same line-up that recorded „Night Of Passion“ in the year 1987. So it's no surprise that the album delivers old-school Hard Rock thriving on heavy riffs and catchy choruses. All in all I think that „Night Of The White Rock“ has become a good comeback album for MAD MAX. I am sure that it will please the fans much more than „Never Say Never“ did back in 2000. For those unfamiliar with the 'Road, this is old-school Heavy Metal with no frills, gimmicks or silly keyboard wanking. What you get here is heavy, inventive riffing, complex songwriting that still maintains a directness of attack, and the nasal yet enthralling vocals of Mark "The Shark" Shelton. From their base in Kansas, isolated from mainstream trends, MANILLA ROAD have churned out album after album of their raw yet intelligent Metal wizardry. "Mystification" is almost all based on the works of Edgar Allen Poe, from the "House Of Usher" homage "Haunted Palace" to the "Masque Of The Red Death" this band spins out tune after tune of their heady, trademark stuff. After more than twenty years in the underground MANILLA ROAD remain one of the great unknown bands, and that borders on criminal, because after all this time, they remain a band well worth the effort. (Online October 9, 2003) $12.99     Voyager $14.99 MANIMAL   The Darkest Room Having no expectations at all is sometimes a true winner and this exactly belongs to the Swedish band MANIMAL and their album “The Darkest Room”. Some songs reminds me a lot of Swedish fellows MASQUERADE’s excellent CD “Surface Of Pain”, which means melodic metal and hard rock of finest class. Try “Living Dead” and “Human Nature” and you’ll get what I mean. The former even wear some TNT vibes, while the latter adds some DREAM THEATER and IRON MAIDEN spices. Another one of the cool songs is “Spinegrinder” which is just as good as prime time DIO! Oh, and “The Life We Lived” reminds me of QUEENSRYCHE, and I mean their “Empire” era. These Swedes really impress on me. A few notes are not hit perfectly by vocalist Samuel Nyman, but you’ve got to remember this is an indie release which they produced themselves. With their debut album they recently reached #36 in the official charts of their home country Sweden. Now it´s time to bring this fantastic new band to all of you! We´re talking about MANIMAL. Sweden´s new force delivers great melodic metal, with up-to-date sound and slightly progressive influences – not to forget: a lot of individuality. Stay tuned for further news. $21.99 MANITOU   Deadlock I guess the most of you are not familiar with MANITOU's 2004 debut album, „The Mad Moon Rising“, since it was released only on a small British label and didn't attract any bigger attention. For the new album the Finnish band caught a deal with Metal Heaven. No wonder, since „Deadlock“ has become an amazing album. The 11 songs don't leave any stone unturned and catapult MANITOU straight into the first league of Melodic Power Metal bands. If I had to draw any comparisons, then I would compare them with ANGEL DUST at the times of „Border Of Reality“. In particularly since the clear and powerful voice of singer Markku Pihlaja sounds very similar to the one of former ANGEL DUST singer Dirk Thurisch. Furthermore you can hear some undeniable similiarties in the guitar work and the songwrititing. Both bands build their songs on dynamic vocal lines, very heavy riffs and some slightly progressive elements. Fortunately MANITOU don't get lost in any endless solos or breaks. Their songs rock straight ahead and don't allow you any deep breathe. On "Razorhead" you'll be able to find real big violent riffs with big rhythmic lines; this is not so fast actually and a bit mid tempo but this is really heavy and loud. I like the fact that this album is extremely dark you'll not find any happy choruses and in the end we're not so far away of Thrash Metal which is a good thing for me. Though, "Razorhead" is not so perfect, sure the style of the music is really cool and we have good songs like "Gods Of Deception" or "Blood And Pain" but the album is a bit linear and repetitive and this is not the average ballad "Nothing Lasts Forever" which will change my general feeling. With "Razorhead", Marshall Law gives a good album but not a perfect one, this is cool to listen to it but you'll not have any big surprises and I'm not sure that a lot of songs will stay in your memory in reason of the lack of big hits. The production of the release is not so perfect. I cannot say that it's bad but sometime this is not really well mixed and a bit too loud. This is not bad though but could be better of course. The line up is only composed of two original members, Andy Pike and Dave Martin but the three other members are convincing and it's hard to blame the band for anything here. No really "Razorhead" only lacks a bit of originality and craziness and I have the feeling that the band is able to do something really better. If they can still play such Power Metal and do something a bit more unconventional it should become great. Marshall Law's come back is not so bad. Their new release is not the album of the year but this is a good album of aggressive Power Metal. I won't say that it's a must but if you want to listen to dark and powerful Power Metal, have a look on "Razorhead" and you shouldn't be disappointed. John sang the lead vocals and performed keyboards on three multi - Platinum albums with band, giving also a major songwriting contribution. Soon the couple became one of the most renowned producers in the genre, in particular their tenure with Petra brought multiple gold and platinum albums, 10 consecutive CCM Magazine Reader's Choice Awards, induction into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame and Hard Rock Cafe, and the only artist to ever have 4 albums in the SoundScan top-100 Christian chart. In order to coincide with the release of Michael Thompson's new band debut album TRW's Rivers of Paradise, Frontiers and Michael agreed that it was a perfect time to re-release this masterpiece on the same day. In 1988, after working to try and get a deal with his band Slang for several years, Thompson got signed by Geffen Records to release one album entitled How Long, under the Michael Thompson Band (MTB) moniker. The singer for this group was Rick 'Moon' Calhoun, previously front man for the AOR cult band The Strand, Michael's long time friend. Completing the line-up were another bunch of highly respected studio professionals such as John Andrew Schreiner (on keyboards), Leon Gaer (bass), John Keane (drums). On How Long more musicians appeared, in particular drummer-maestro Terry Bozzio, Pat Torpey (of Mr Big), bassist Jimmy Haslip, ex Kansas vocalist John Elefante, Toto's Bobby Kimball and Great White associates Michael Lardie and Wyn Davis (who also produced the album). As of today How Long is regarded as one of the highest examples of hi-tech AOR / West Coast, with a superb production and immaculate songwriting. After the new awesome drummer Andrea Stipa joined the band, the guys recorded the first demo entitled “Welcome to Another Reality” that brought them to the attention of Frontiers Records, who released the band’s debut “Journey Of A Rough Diamond” in July 2004. MK line up also included Mark Basile on vocals and Raffaele Castaldo on bass. Just before the release of the album, Mark Basile left the group and in preparation of the subsequent tour dates, the guys met for the first time Aurelio Fierro Jr. a singer with a vast experience, who was able to give some splendid performances especially in the gigs that MK landed as support of Dream Theater for the Italian “Train Of Thought Tour 2004”. Mike Portnoy in particular said: “These guys sound really excellent!” MK played more live dates in support of Vision Divine, Pendragon and also appeared at the Progpower Europe Festival with more dates in Poland, Switzerland, Holland, Germany and France. During the Polish dates, a Live DVD was recorded “Habemus Poland”, with the singer Giorgio Adamo as frontman. However he soon left to make space for the return of Aurelio Fierro, who was a more suitable choice for Emanuele, Dario & Andrea on the basis of the strength of the new material written for the follow up album.
