The New Machine
The V-Project is the brainchild of David Vaccaro, one of the denizens of the 1970s Boston scene that produced The Cars, J. Geils and Aerosmith, to name a few. “New Machine” finds Vaccaro mining familiar album-oriented-rock (AOR) depths with aplomb. Assisted by the ever dynamic Robin McAuley (McAuley-Schenker Group, Grand Prix, Survivor) on four tracks, Vaccaro has created a dynamic and authentic piece of late-70’s, early-80’s influenced guitar rock. “New Machine” does not break any new ground, but is a very listenable opus that dances around the edges of Southern Rock and 80’s Hair Metal at times. The highlights here happen to be the collaborations between McAuley and Vaccaro (“Exit Sign”, “Somebody Like You”, “You Don’t Care” and “Tangled In Your Web”). Also interesting is the Steve Miller cover “The Stake”.

All Those Strangers
Vain released their debut, “No Respect” in 1989 and their videos, "Beat the Bullet" and "Who's Watching You" were featured in rotation on MTV's Headbanger's Ball and Hard 30/Hard 60 programs. The band toured the USA and rounded out the year with a UK tour supporting Skid Row.In 1991, things were to take a turn for the worse for Vain, and it would be finances rather than grunge which claimed this glam metal casualty, as their label, Island Records, collapsed before the band could release their second studio album, All Those Strangers. West and Rickard left the band in late 1991. Guitarist Shawn Rorie and former Guns N' Roses drummer Steven Adler joined the band, which was re-named Roadcrew. Although a major label recording did not materialize, many of the Roadcrew songs can be found on later Vain releases.

Review:
No Respect is the debut from the California quintet known as Vain, and they kick ass! This band, along with Jetboy and the Sea Hags, helped solidify the San Francisco metal scene. I call their style hair/glam/sleaze.
Songs such as "Secrets", "Who's Watching You" and "Ready" really rock. No Respect is one of the best and most underrated albums of the 80's. They had the look and sounded great, they should have been famous! I give No Respect two thumbs up!

This is indeed a very nice surprise to see the reunited US AOR outfit feat. singer Hugo (Valenti) back in business with a new studio album.
Their 1990 released selftitled debut still stands as one of the greeatest AOR albums ever and even if the following OPEN SKYZ album was just a very mellow affair, VALENTINE are still everybody’s darling with the AOR fan base. It doesn’t happens that much often that a reunited band can come up after such a long hiatus with a strong new release, but “Soul Salvation” has class overall and turns out much stronger as the recently released Ramos-Hugo project.
“Soul Salvation” smells the classic JOURNEY sound all the way and will satisfy every AOR lover for sure.

A Sign Of Things To Come
For the older metal fans the name Michael Vescera will certainly ring a bell. The man has put his mark on records by Obsession, Reign of Terror, Loudness and Yngwie Malmsteen.
After that he made 3 records under the name MVP (Michael Vescera Project). On this new solo-record he is assisted by Jim Bell and BJ Zampa (both House Of Lords), Chris McCarvill (Obsession, Jef Scott Soto), Mats Olaussen (Yngwie, Ark), Scott Boland, John Bruno, Joy Mezias (all Obsession), Todd Kennedy, Tony Mei (both XfactorX) and 2 "guitar master" discoveries; 17 years old Joey Concepion and Ango Tasso from Taiwan. Opener "Between Heaven and Hell" is a neat song, the melody lines and singing are in Yngwie style. On the whole record Michael's singing is of old. The man doesn't have to prove himself anymore. O.k. he is not the best singer in the world, but he finishes high enough. "Something to Believe" is a slower epic song with high vocals and a nice melody.
Personally I like the more faster tracks, such as the opening track and "Hands of Fate". All songs include nice guitar solos and the record is well produced. If you are crazy about classic melodic metal, sometimes fast, sometimes slow, with good vocals and excellent guitars, just take a change.

Ground Zero
The Basis of Vindictiv started in early 2004 and is the brainchild of Stefan Lindholm. At an early stage Stefan contacted keyboard maestro Pontus Larsson and they started to work on some of the songs Stefan had laid down. They recorded a demo with Tommy Karevik (Seventh Wonder) and guitarist Johan Larsson (Johan and Tommy Band). The result was the 2005 demo and it met with some great reviews in Sweden rock magazine. However, Johan and Tommy decided to move on but Stefan managed to contact respected singer Goran Edman (Yngwie Malmsteen / Karma, etc) and, as he liked the songs, he put his heart and soul into making them fantastic. Bass player Nalle Pahlsson (Zan-Clan, Treat) joined the already impressive line-up and through Goran they got in touch with drummer Mikael Wikman, who played on the debut (ESM164). Zoltan Csorsz has since taken the stool and his fantastic drumming can be heard on “Ground Zero”.
Musically the band is everything you would expect and more from Sweden. Goran Edman sings his heart out on seven of the eleven tracks and his powerful pipes suit the band in a way that just can only be described as awesome. The guitar technique of Stefan Lindholm is as crisp and neat as ever, and he seems to effortlessly produce exciting riffs and melodies with nonchalance. His early years admiring and emulating the works of Malmsteen and Vai shine through but he does have a technique of his own that finds its way through. Keyboards play a vital role in the overall sound and there are plenty of “cat and mouse” keyboards throughout, and when in harmony, form a grand wall of sound. The inclusion of Oliver Hartmann and Mark Boals in the vocal duties is a clever one and gives the band a more interesting slant; their input puts the cherry on top of the cake. There is simply not a weak track on the CD and the huge leap forward in sound since the debut is unquestionable.
“Ground Zero” is a fantastic outing into Majestic Metal with the flawless guitar technique of Lindholm leading the way, of course backed by the pedigree of the band members. Vindictiv have taken a big step forward and have matured beyond all expectations.

Musically the band is everything you would expect and more from Sweden. The past vocal work of Goran Edman is bound to create a stir before we even put the CD in the player! The opening chords of "Fool's Paradise" say it all, and the scene is set for a great outing of powerful melodies and soaring harmonies. The guitar technique of Stefan Lindholm is very nice, and he seems toe effortlessly produce exciting riffs and melodies.
His early years admiring and emulating the works of Malsteen and Vai shine through but he does have a technique of his own that finds its way through. It is possible to find overall comparisons to Malmsteen, Treat, Talk of the Town and many more. However, Vindictiv do possess an air of individuality that will set them apart and the release of this fantastic debut album will be eagerly awaited by all.

History begins in the early 80's where the all the popular bands were arena-bands and most of them come out of the L.A. In a sleepy little town in Sweden, 4 guys grew up listening to the brand new kind of metal and hardrock that MTV and the independent recordstores offered them.
Bands like Motley Crue, Ratt, Poison, Van Halen, Aerosmith where highway of inspiration for this 4 guys (even though Klaus were more into the trash scene with bands like Slayer and the early version of Metallica, and didn't care much for those "hairbands" that were ruling the charts).
While growing up and starting their own bands, their paths crossed every now and then. Through bands like Marshal Kane, Abandoned Sphinx, Starsky, Sleazy Rose, Millhouse these 4 guys met, broke up, met again for about over a decade, until the day in 2005 when the time had come to form VIOLENT DIVINE.
Colored by their background and their musical sources of inspiration, VIOLENT DIVINE is a summary of all those years playing music, being on stage, playin the same records that they did when it all began... and the love they share for this kind of hard but melodic rock. In 2006 the band inked a deal with Chavis Records for their debut release.

Ferrum Gravis
One of the best debut albums from Germany ever”, Rock Hard Magazin wrote about NWOGHM, the first CD of the German metal band VIRON. After just one demo-ep the CD was released by a small Greek metal label and received very good reviews in all metal related magazines. Even the title appeared to be a bit polarizing, the CD surprisingly does sounded more like classic US Metal than like Teutonic Metal which often tends to be more “happy” sounding.
After the release VIRON played on several festivals including Headbangers Open Air and Swordbrothers Festival and did small tours and single shows with bands like Ruffians, Majesty, Sabaton or Morgana Lefay. And again they got tons of great reviews in the press, this time for being a great live band.
In 2007 VIRON added a song to the Manilla Road tribute compilation “The Riddle Masters”. This positive development in such a short period of time showed that their previous label wasn't able to handle VIRON in a necessary and needful way. So they agreed to let VIRON go. After receiving several offers, they signed with Metal Heaven in Summer 2007.
NWOGHM included all the songs the band had written until the day of entering the studio. What you hear on the CD is a reproduction of what the band sounded live on stage. On FERRUM GRAVIS the band again didn't use modern studio technics like triggered drums or amp-simulations. You won't find keyboards on the CD and it was mastered just as much as it was needful. Even though the way of recording is quite similar to the debut, the new CD shows a lot of differences.
Much more time was invested into the songwriting process and catchy refrains were a major goal. The CD again was produced at Kohlekeller Studio (Sieges Even, Killers, Crematory). After a month of recording and mixing, FERRUM GRAVIS has a clear and natural, but still powerful sound.
FERRUM GRAVIS shows a huge development of the typical VIRON style and it seems like they have created an album suitable for any metal fan. The style ranges from classic metal to thrash, even within single songs, but everything fits together very well though. They show that classic metal doesn't need to sound outdated, that true metal must not deal with dragons & swords or needs to contain “kindergarden melodies” and that melody and heavyness can go well together. With FERRUM GRAVIS, VIRON will break out of the metal underground.

Not many bands deserve to be labelled "legends", but VOIVOD are definitely one of these bands. The Canadian band from Montreal never had their commercial breakthrough but influenced legions of metal bands with their original sound, a sound that no band was ever able to copy - unique and special. VOIVOD are one of the bands which both fans and musicians have great respect for.
Their fourteenth album (and first for Nuclear Blast in 2006), "Katorz" was finished under tragical circumstances: Piggy, legendary guitar player and founding member died of colon cancer in 2005 during the recording process. But it was his wish that "Katorz" would see the light of day. His guitar parts were already recorded on his laptop. He gave drummer Away some advice on how to find and use them. So the album was mainly put together around Piggy’s guitar parts. Three years later, "Infini" is released and features another share of his legacy. All his original demo guitar tracks appear as they were recorded – no re-amping, no overdubs, just Piggy as he played the tracks he envisioned in his small bachelor apartment. The amp in the bathroom, capturing his performance with the laptop given to him by Jason Newsted. There were many discussions and ideas as to how to complete these recordings of songs that had never been actually performed with the whole band in one room. Away went into a studio in Montreal with engineer Glen Robinson and tracked his drum parts, and Jason waited anxiously to get the tracks and add his bass which he recorded with Enrique Gonzalez Müller at Fantasy Studios in San Francisco, then Snake tracked his vocals with Glen in Montreal afterwards. Jason and Enrique mixed the record in San Francisco over the holidays and Infini was born.Truly a collaborative record that came together from a respect and belief that these final VOIVOD songs deserved to be heard. Infini may be their last release as VOIVOD.
In light of this sentiment the band agreed to play some summer festivals in 08 with original bass player Blacky and fellow Montrealer Dan Mongrain of the band Martyr, playing all classic era VOIVOD material.
Dan turns out to be a technical wizard, and his own band Martyr is a well respected extreme prog metal band from Montreal. It was a risky move, but the fans and the band were happy with the outcome so much so that this lineup will play more live shows this summer. Jason is still a member of VOIVOD, and one day there may be live shows performing the songs from the last three records that Jason was very much a part of.

Danish metallers VOLBEAT will release their first-ever DVD, entitled "Live: Sold Out!", on February 15 via Mascot. The double DVD digipack with an eight-page booklet includes concert and behind-the-scenes footage shot at everything from small venues to festival appearances to the band's support gig with METALLICA in Denmark.
VOLBEAT has been nominated in the following categories at the annual Danish Music Awards (the Danish Grammy Awards equivalent):

The LP was recently certified platinum in Denmark for sales in excess of 30,000 copies. According to the band this marks the first time a Danish metal album has sold platinum in Denmark.
"Rock The Rebel / Metal The Devil" entered the Danish chart at No. 1 upon its release in late February and stayed in the Top 5 for three months.
