Here Comes The Night
Born and raised in Stockholm, Sweden Matti Alfonzetti began his musical career in his early teens playing bass in the local Hard Rock band Heavy Waters. Later on, he was a member of the bands Bam Bam Boys, Water Front, Jagged Edge, Skintrade and Boxer.
In 2000 Alfonzetti’s first solo album ‘Ready’ saw the light of day – followed, two years later, by the album ‘Machine’. Following this Matti started getting into songwriting and producing and had success producing and writing for bands such as The Poodles among others. One new project emerged in 2007, Road To Ruin, including drummer Tomas Broman and Sampo Axelsson and Lars Chriss of Lion’s Share. ‘Road To Ruin’ came out the same year on Metal Heaven.
Now, Alfonzetti’s third solo album is ready. Titled ‘Here Comes The Night’, it is the Alfonzetti’s return to the music and vocal style of first solo album ‘Ready’ with up to date production. This time Matti collaborated with drummer/ producer Daniel Flores and the albums includes guests such as Marcus Jidell (Evergrey) and Emil Fredholm
(Plankton).The CD was recorded at Sound vs Science Studios and Atomic Rooster Studios, Stockholm. All songs were written and produced by Matti Alfonzetti and mixed and co-produced by Daniel Flores.

The CD was recorded in May-June 2011 at Norcal Studio in São Paulo, Brazil and was mixed and mastered in July at Split Second Sound Studios in Amsterdam, Netherlands by Jochem Jacobs (TEXTURES).
10 songs were tracked for the effort, which was composed by the entire band and is described in a press release as "really heavy and up-to-date with less influences of typical melodic metal."

We Are The Brokenhearted
The history of Beggars & Thieves goes back to the late Eighties, when formed by vocalist Louie Merlino and guitarist Ronnie Mancuso in New York City. Their self-titled debut was released in 1989 to good reviews. Label problems and the rise of grunge stifled their sophomore effort Look What You Create, and the band dissolved. But this didn't stop their involvement in the music business nor the possibility of a resurrection of Beggars & Thieves. This came at Firefest 2010 to everyone's surprise. Now signed to Frontiers, B&T returns with We Are the Brokenhearted.
Merlino and Mancuso have lost nothing in twenty years. Merlino offers strong and focused vocals, and Mancuso, exceptional guitar work. We Are the Brokenhearted is an entertaining platter of well-crafted AOR melodic rock, reflecting as much strong composition and musicianship, as emotion. While that latter element flows throughout, it pervades songs like the heartfelt and soaring Wash Away and the epic and stirring Oil & Water.
But there's also some keen rock tunes on this album. Innocence and Seven Seconds offer more edge. Then We Come Undone and Midnight Blue have a more a determined delivery, a deeper groove in, at times, a warm heaviness. Lighter fare, nearing ballad quality, comes on Never Gonna See You Again and melodic rock on Stranded.
Beggars & Thieves return on We Are the Brokenhearted finds principals guitarist Ronnie Mancuso and vocalist Louie Merlino in fine form. The album offers a mature, but also fresh, take on classic AOR melodic rock. Recommended.

There are some bands that live up to the hype, and others that don't. I think this lot - Day One, are in the latter category. It's been described as a legendary pomp AOR album next to ANGEL, ROADMASTER and TRILLION and it’s indeed a good album for collectors of AOR and pomp, and as mentioned, Angel fans might get some value out of this album. Great guitar rhythms, a few fancy solos, and the keyboard work from maestro Craig Otte might be enough to convince AORsters that this is worth every cent, but to be perfectly honest, it’s just a decent release compared to the legendary outfits mentioned above. Ghosts From The Past
FATE was formed in late '84 in Copenhagen, Denmark by Hank Sherman who left Mercyful Fate and got together with Jeff "Lox" Limbo (a.k.a. Jens Meiner), Bob Lance (a.k.a. Bjarne Holm) and Pete Steiner (a.k.a. Peter Steincke). During the 80’s, the band was one of the leading forces of the Scandi Rock genre and released classic albums such as “Fate” (1985), “A Matter Of Attitude” (1986), “Cruisin’ For A Brusin’” (1988) and “Scrath N’ Sniff” (1990) and went permanently on the road – both as headliner and as support to Pretty Maids and Yngwie Malmsteen among others. Over the years, FATE went through a couple of line-up changes and remained to be active until 1993.
The second chapter was opened when the Danish five-piece started to play live again in 2005. The release of the album “V” (2006), some more touring and yet more line-up changes followed. “Ghost From The Past” now is their sixth studio album in total and the first to feature singer Dagfinn Joensen on vocals, Danish guitar hero Torben Enevoldsen on the six string, Peter Steincke on bass, Jens Berglid on drums and Mikkel Henderson on keyboards.
The CD was produced by Fate and Thomas Pedersen at various studios in Denmark and mastered by Torben Lysholm. With this album “Ghosts From The Past”, FATE is truly back!

The Shape Of Rage
English metal band Intense has been plugging away at their craft for 20 years. Now signed to Germany's Pure Legend Records, the band delivers their third full length album, The Shape of Rage. While 20 years only puts them back to the early Nineties, one listen to this disc find that their roots go deeper into the earlier. The Shape of Rage is blistering platter of old school Metal mixing heavy, speed, and power metal in a melodic wrapper, pushed by a driving rhythm section and twin guitar attack.
From the gate, Intense is, well, 'intense' offering a songs that clip along at fast and heavy pace. Anubis, The Elemental, and One Man's Word gallop along, leaving little time for catching your breath. Lightning guitar solos pepper each song. Once you get to For the Fallen, Intense, in terms of speed, lightens up quite a bit. It's a heavy, steady, piece nuanced by vocals over light guitar and drums, and a smattering of acoustic guitar. But, don't dismay it cranks up with some big riffage and more guitar solos for an epic feel.
Save Me from Myself, Lie, and the title cut return to racing speed, typical of the album. But they also express how easily Intense can deliver bombastic riffage in a truly melodic arrangement. While the speed side of the band is quite evident and exciting, they're even better when they tone things down or simply merge them with more steady metal as on Maidenesque sounding song, Haunted. (Note the bass segment just before four minutes also). Skull of Sidon II delivers a similar arrangement, sublime and steady at first, but then breaks out with speed midway. The result is a song with an epic feel.
For pure and classic heavy metal, with equal parts speed, power, and melodic metal, Intense's The Shape of Rage delivers the goods. Fans of 'true' metal should buy this straight away. Up the Irons!

The album is a straightforward melodic hard rock release, with big guitar hooks, prominent keyboards and of course a couple of ballads. It seems a bit less inspired than “Cycle of the Moon” though, as if the band were just going through the motions towards the end of their career. After his departure from JOURNEY and before the forming of THE STORM, keyboarder/singer Gregg Rolie started a solo career in the mid 1980’s. Two years after his self-titled debut, he released the sophomore album “Gringo”. The album features an impressive list of guest musicians, among others Bob Marlette, Neal Schon, Dan Huff, Carlos Santana Vinnie Colaiuta. The production was handled by Richie Zito (HEART, WHITE LION, BAD ENGLISH a. o.) and David Kershenbaum (Tracy Chapman, Bryan Adams a. o.) while for the songwriting Gregg Rolie got some help from Martin Page, Peter Becket and André Pessis. It goes without saying that an album created by such professionals became a true gem! Stylistically you can shelf “Gringo” right next to Robert Tepper’s “No Easy Way Out”, VAN STEPHENSON’s “Suspicious Heart” and THE ARROW’s “The Lines Are Open”. The comparison with the latter it no coincidence, since Gregg Rolie covered their hit song “Talk Talk” for “Gringo”. The legendary opener “The Hands Of Time”, the pompous “Don’t Wanna Be Alone Tonight”, the fast-paced “Too Late, Too Late”, the smooth ballad “Fire At Night” (featuring an amazing guitar solo duel between Neal Schon and Carlos Santana) and the quite poppy “I Will Get To You” are further highlights featured on “Gringo”. I am still in love with this album and in my opinion it’s a true classic. Unfortunately the AOR HEAVEN CLASSIX reissue doesn’t include any bonus tracks, but as usual it was remastered by Chris Lyne (SOUL DOCTOR) and includes some liner notes by Dave Reynolds. MARCO SPÄTH

When it comes to Riff Rock, then countless great bands from Australia come to your mind. But when it comes to Melodic Rock music, then it’s very challenging to name more than two or three bands who really left a mark. One of them definitely might be ROXUS whose one and only album “Night Street” of the year 1992 is a true classic! Even though the album was never officially released in Europe, it found many fans over here. The original album features ten perfectly composed Melodic Rock songs which can be described as a mixture of early BON JOVI and CROWN OF THORNS with a big shot of WARRANT. While an anthem like “Midnight Love” or the power ballad “This Time” would have fit well on one of BON JOVI’s first albums or the CROWN OF THORNS debut, the party rocker “Bad Boys” sounds like it was originally written for WARRANT’s “Dirty, Rotten, Filthy, Stinking Rich” album. The same applies to the sentimental ballad “Jimi G” that can definitely keep up with WARRANT hits like “Heaven” or “I Saw Red”. One of ROXUS’ biggest plus factors was singer Juno Roxas. His powerful and emotional vocals added a certain something to all the songs. Producer Mark Opitz (a. o. INXS) did a great job and found the perfect balance between guitars and keyboards. The AOR HEAVEN CLASSIX reissue features a remastered sound by Chris Lyne (SOUL DOCTOR), liner notes penned by Dave Reynolds and the awesome bonus track “Body Heat”. If “Night Street” is still missing in your collection, then finally go and fill this embarrassing gap!

Royal Hunt are one of Denmark's most accomplished Hard Rock bands. They have sold of over 1 million albums worldwide. Their sound is a mix of the instrumental prowess of Dream Theater with a touch of neoclassical and a more mainstream rock feel and vocal style.

DVD1 (1996) was recorded live in Japan just after the release of the band's "Moving Target” album. "1996" is an excellent summary of Royal Hunt's career up to that point. DVD2 "Paradox - Closing the Chapter" was recorded in 1998 and marked the end of the original DC Cooper era for Royal Hunt. It is essentially a complete live performance of the band's amazing studio album "Paradox", their most successful album to date. It is a very solid performance and DC delivers the goods, while the band's playing is superb. To complete the package is a 50 minute documentary which shares stories of life in a rock band.

Sandstone is a band that hails from Ireland, and are playing a mixture of Progressive and Melodic Power Metal. This is their third album so far, following their latest 2009 work, titled "Purging The Past", which amongst others, received great comments from Bruce Dickinson. Now, the band is blending two almost similar styles of music, creating something that has the trademarks and the strong points of both genres. First of all is melodic, and catchy, something that makes the music easy to get into from the first listening. Parts memorable enough, easy to sing along and a groovy rhythm section, enhance this feeling, and make the songs even better. But, along with that, there's diversity and complexity into the song structures, and enough things hidden, that the listeners have to discover with each listening. The music is heavier than their previous work, due to the addition of a second guitar, and this is a certain step forward for the new album. Along with that, comes the vocals, which are also very good, well worked, and fitting perfectly with the music, either slow and melodic, or harder and more powerful. The production is very good, as clear as should be, and points out all the details of the music. If you seek an album that can combine the fast and melodic elements of Power Metal, with complexity of Progressive, into a mixture that has no weak points, then this is an album that you should check out. After all, coming from a country with a huge tradition in music, is somehow assuring the result.

While the band's badass name makes you expect something heavier with a more metallic edge, this is some really good modern hard rock that doesn't make you want to suck on a gun barrel after listening to it. The Danish band really doesn't do anything revolutionary, content to just stick to the tried-and-true formula for American commercial rock radio success: good production, thick guitars, catchy hooks, and cool choruses. The songs vary smoothly between sleazy hard rock, Bon Jovi-esque midtempo tunes, Nickelback-ish rockers, Kid Rock-like foot-stompers, and Hinder-styled ballads. Produced by the mighty Flemming Rasmussen (Metallica) you can be sure to get a top sounding album from start to finish.

He sings great and vocally he can definitely keep up with Joe Lynn Turner or Glenn Hughes, but his songwriting is not yet strong enough to compete. So if you enjoy music in the style and with the heaviness a la MICHAEL LEARNS TO ROCK, then light-footed songs like “I Know Who I Love”, “Come Back To Me” (my personal favorite on the album), “Dance The Lonely Spotlight” and “Everything I Do” are tailor-made for you. The album’s only little letdown is the too fluffy and monotonous ballad “Love Struck Dumb”. Apart from that “It’s A Beautiful Life” is a very entertaining album that the fans of “Mighty Blue Ocean” should put on their wishlist!

Invaders From Another World
Sometimes it is difficult to put a band in a category. Here at Lords Of Metal we the category ‘speed/thrash’ as well as the category ‘heavy/power’. But this band is best described as ‘speed/power’. Luckily this combination of speed and power metal works excellent. The Colombians of Thunderblast also have a theme which fits perfectly with the music they make, namely horror/science-fiction. Titles like ‘Horror At Outpost 10’ or ‘When Zombies Rise’ are excellent for the fast metal of Thunderblast.
Next to that, the songs are solid. After the intro the record bursts lose with ‘Core Domain’, in which the combination of speed and power is directly eminent. Influences from the older works of Iced Earth and Iron Maiden, but also that of bands as Kreator are clearly there. Because these influences come in the right proportions not one of them is dominant and this makes the songs well-balanced. The quality of the songs remains good throughout the album and therefore we have almost an hour to enjoy the speed and the power. Ballads is something this band does not do, they hit the gas (power) and sometimes they hit the gas even more (speed). Fans of aforementioned traditional metal styles will do well listening to ‘Invaders From Another World’, because Thunderblast let us hear also from Colombia comes some surprisingly good metal.

The band URGENT was built around the three brothers Michael, Don and Steve Kehr, but also featured Yul Vasquez who later joined cult rockers DIVING FOR PEARLS. So don’t mistake this band URGENT with the Canadian band of the same name who released their album “Timing” at the very same time. Well, but back to the reissue of “Thinking Out Loud” which got remastered by Chris Lyne (SOUL DOCTOR), is limited to 1.000 copies and features detailed liner-notes by Dave Reynolds. The album includes 11 very strong Classic Rock tracks in the vein of LOVERBOY, BOULEVARD, Russ Ballard and the legendary STABILIZERS. The sound of URGENT sometimes is more guitar-driven (“I Can’t Take It No More”) and sometimes more keyboard oriented (“If This Is Love”). Three years ago, VICIOUS DISORDER (taking an idea and direction given to them from their business advisor Sullivan Bigg of Bigg Time Entertainment in Los Angeles) wrote a song incorporating the eerie classic theme music from the "Halloween" movies (written by John Carpenter in 1978). They recorded "Pure Evil" with producer John Ellis at Prism Sound in Acton, MA. The song was then submitted to the executive producers at Trancas Films by Bigg on behalf of VICIOUS DISORDER. The song was accepted and after some negotiations a deal was made. Along with the song being used in the documentary, the band has its own link in the special features section of the DVD menu. Life's Blood
North Carolina's Widow offers, unapologetically, classic American melodic heavy metal on their fourth disc Life's Blood. Their influences are notable including King Diamond, Crimson Glory, Warlord, Iron Maiden, and Judas Priest, and the music certainly injects doses of NWOBHM and European power metal. This is totally against most modern conventions and that's a very good thing.
Above, Widow: cheap sunglasses and vintage metal tees required in this band.
Most apparent across Life's Blood is the band strong sense of harmony and melody in vocal and chord arrangements, while still remaining heavy. Lady Twilight, Embrace It, and Behind the Light are certain examples. Then, between the lyrics and arrangements the songs offer a strong metal-rock groove and crafty hooks to create very catchy tunes. Take Hold of the Night, The Burning Ones, and the quite accessible The One I Know delivers on this account.
But, of course, you can expect some basic metal. For instance, the more deliberate and steady melodic heavy metal on In Dreams or the fast speed metal of I Scream for Ice Cream. There might even be a metal ballad in Another Fallen Angel, as it sways between lighter and heavier moments only to build and rise to a crescendo of guitar solos. Frankly, there's much to enjoy here. However, but understanding it's supposed to be metal, the cover art is simply ugly.
Fans of traditional, and often rocking, melodic heavy metal will find Widow's latest Life's Blood significant and entertaining. Widow are craftsmen in this classic genre
